Altadena, California

The Eaton Fire was a devastating wildfire that erupted on January 7, 2025, near Eaton Canyon in the foothills above Altadena and Pasadena during an intense Santa Ana wind event. Fueled by hurricane-force winds and dry conditions, the fire rapidly spread through residential neighborhoods, ultimately burning more than 14,000 acres, destroying over 9,000 structures, displacing more than 100,000 residents, and killing at least 19 people, making it one of the deadliest and most destructive fires in California history.

Photographed at the first anniversary of the fires, these diptychs bring together fire survivors and the objects that survived with them or were found in the ashes of their homes. Most of the survivors are photographed on their property in Altadena.

This project is supported by LA Fire Justice.
